Discovering the Cairo Geniza

Described as the "single most complete archive of a society anywhere in the whole medieval world", the Cairo Geniza project started over a century ago. It is through the deciphering of thousands of crumpled fragments of paper, papyrus and vellum, using the latest in modern technology, that we have been able to peer into the private lives of Jewish scholars, such as Maimonides and Judah Halevi, but also of everyday Jews, living around the Mediterranean Sea during the Middle Ages.
