Jews thrived and flourished without persecution on the Indian sub-continent for more than 1,800 years. Little is known of their religious and cultural lives in the broader communities in Australia, or indeed, outside the major Indian cities. Even less is known of the generosity of the people that enabled the five Jewish communities and their synagogues to thrive without persecution. India's synagogues date from the 16th century and are some of the oldest in the Commonwealth.
